Hi, I’m Yanming Huang (Daniel), a student at Shanghai Starriver Bilingual School in Shanghai, China. I’m curious about how computation, language, and music intersect, and I like turning questions into projects I can research, build, and write about. That curiosity has taken me from reinforcement learning for online tutoring and an AI companion for elderly care to collaborative music technology, linguistics, and essays on education and climate justice.

Outside of school, I care a lot about stories and ideas. My favourite film is Blade Runner, my favourite book is The Picture of Dorian Gray, and the show I plan to binge next is Yes, Prime Minister. My theme song is “Welcome to Wonderland” by Anson Seabra, and if I could teach a class on anything, it would be the development of ideologies and values across history. Given a free summer, I would travel across Europe — especially Norway and Italy — and my ideal roommate would be Iron Man.

What’s next

I’m looking for a university community where I can keep asking questions across computer science, mathematics, music technology, linguistics, and writing. In the near term, that means finishing my AP Research project on the emotional characteristics of AI-generated music and building on the research and collaboration skills I developed in the Collaborative Music Lab. Longer term, I want to work on problems where technology meets people — and to stay curious enough to keep changing what I work on.
